No Digression

20 Nov

The Eagles suck. Really, really suck. The Sixers have gotten off to a mediocre start with their star centered injured and out for who knows how long. The NHL is on strike and therefore no Flyers games. The Phillies are coming off a mediocre season and are in the quiet part of the offseason.

So, sports is out.

The election is over. There are no more polls, advertisements, or speeches. Barack Obama, for better or worse, has been reelected. The Senate and House of Representatives remain nearly unchanged.

So, the political races are over.

What am I to do?

I am on the computer. Maybe, I’m creating an assignment for students, writing a blog entry, creating a story. My mind wanders. I’m distracted. Or maybe, I’m just stalling. Semantics I suppose, but I digress. The point is I am leaving the productive mode and entering wandering mode. I click a button and am suddenly surfing the world wide web (by the way, I always wanted to learn how to surf. I think I’ll put it on my bucket list under learn to play the harmonica. There I go digressing again).  I’d like to think this digression is actually part of the creative process. Research if you will. It keeps my mind active.

Who am I kidding?

For every time that I am doing true research there are 15 times where I am feeding my overactive mind with useless information. Do you know how often I pop on WordPress? Way. Too. Often.

So, what else should I do? I don’t have a ton of interests. I hop on Yahoo and see the ‘big’ stories. By the way, the latest headlines are Theron’s shocking haircut and small room’s big surprises.  Despite my wanderlust, I think I can stay away from those ‘big’ stories.

Ahh, self-control feels good.

If something doesn’t come along soon, I might stay focused. I might find myself cranking out work quicker than I could skim through another useless article. I think I might become Super Productive. Maybe, I could get a cape and a theme song.  This could be good.

I waste so much of my lesson planning time on my blog. I love to see what goes through the minds of others… and it gives me a chance to say the things I cannot in the classroom. Check out my blog as well!

I do need to focus more on my work in general. In general, I look at other blogs more than my own when it comes to wasting time.
I look foward to checking out your blog.

During Sandy my parents lost power – they came to my house to use the Internet so they could “work”. Instead they spent the day going on and on about useless information and interesting articles. It occurred to me that they just couldn’t turn it off – they had become afraid of silence and maybe even facing their own thoughts. Being fed information 24/7 keeps you thinking about what others feed you and never having to face yourself.

Heavy stuff there. Often it is easier to consider what others feed you rather than having to face yourself.

I’m pretty focused but put me in front of a computer and I become the most ADD-addled adult you’ve ever seen. It’s a real challenge at work.

I soooo hear you. It’s weird that I enjoy reading so much. I can really get engrossed in a book and mind just settles in.

Focused is not an option – especially for a holiday week. My boss just called, seeing how I was, hadn’t talked to me yet this week. I told him that I was most likely taking off early tomorrow – sitting at my desk this week has not been productive at all!

Holidays add to the lack of focus – don’t you think?
      Enjoy the off day.

I hear you and have been in the same place lately. I’m rooting for the cape and theme song! And a video of both for your next post!

I’m kind of worried… for some reason this blog post sounds “sad”… even that’s not the correct word… a little depressed… uhm… regretting?
There’s too much to do – and so little time – and I’m completely overworked… and still there’s more to do…
But there’s no break inside… and yes… you’re right – too much useless information…too much silence all of a sudden after “the race”?
I hope you’re going to find something really cool to do soon… like counting the maccaroni in the box or find a hobby – like for example, making collages from whipped cream and coffee beans…?

Counting the maccroni – that’s brilliant. You are a life saver.
Seriously, I would be very happy to put more of my focus on writing.

I know exactly what you mean!
It seems, in particular right now, when it’s getting closer to Christmas I’m always too busy to do things for others than for myself and things I love – like writing! Good luck, ok?

    Hi,
Don’t worry about it. Enjoy the silence. I am learning that for all the hectic, it is when the storm blows over, that you hear the inner voice of your spirit that is trying to talk to you. So keep a pad and pencil nearby and listen to mumbo jumbo in your head until it becomes crystal clear in a concrete thought.
    Ciao,
    Patricia

I really have to do the pad and pencil thing. I was also thinking of getting one of those recorders for my ideas. I have stories, lines, and paragrpaghs that come to me and I wish I held on to them more regularly.
Nice to hear from you again.

        Hi,
I have been away because I have been participating in the NaNoWriMo this month. The challenge is to write a novel with at least 50000 words. Having participated the last two years, I have never reached my goal. Something else has always come up. This year, I have over 58000 words, and I am happy to say I have reached my goal. But inorder to do it, I have had to put everything on the back burner for three weeks.
It is good to be back.
Hope you are enjoying the Thanksgiving weekend.
        Shalom,
        Patricia

Wow, that is alot of words. Good for you for accomplishing your goal. Remember quality and not quanity.
Hope you had a chance to celebrate Thanksgiving overseas

You can’t always be productive and focussed, there are times when digression is the only way. And I also vote yes to the cape and theme tune 🙂

I think you and I exchanged comments on this same topic from your blog recently.
Anyway, cape and theme song – I’m thinking about it.

LOL! Story of my life. I read a quote not too long ago (it’s now taped to my desk to remind me when I digress): Those who make the worst use of their time are the first to complain of its shortness. ~ Jean De La Bruyère

I don’t think it hurts to wander off topic from time to time. Some of my best ideas come from my digressions.

      Great quote!
I also agree with you that digression can be helpful – in moderation.

Oops know the feeling, focus, focus, focus! But, sometimes it’s nice to wander 😉

It really is. I enjoy wandering the outskirts of my mind and the internet.
